God’s Love Never Changes
On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, we entered the season of autumnal equinox. This season is characterized by the slower growth of plants, cooler temperatures, and changes in the rhythms of human life.
Most things slow down! I will admit that this is my favorite time of the year. Slowing down offers the opportunity to be more observant of our surroundings, especially nature. The leaves fall. Grass becomes dormant. To prepare for the colder months of winter, squirrels and other animals stockpile food. During September, the ruby-throated hummingbirds we have enjoyed watching dart from containers of nectar begin their long journey south. Change marks this season.
Although things have changed, some things remain the same — God’s amazing love for us. The writer of the book of Hebrews testified, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13.8). It is affirming to have something that remains constant. We are grappling with many changes in many sectors of society.
After Noah’s ark nestled on the earth and his family waited for the ground to become dry, God promised Noah that the earth will not be destroyed by rain again. The rainbow was placed in the sky as a sign of God’s promise. In Genesis 8.22, God said to Noah, “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” Although the seasons remain the same, we see changes in them. Climatologists believe our ill-treatment of the earth is a direct relationship to patterns that have become endangering.
Some things remain constant. Although we cannot deny the negative changes we are seeing in nature, the cycle of day and night continues. The Lord still provides, and His word remains true. As we might become skeptical of some things in our society, we trust that the Lord’s love for us will remain as it has been and promises to be—“the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Amen.
